Scriptures: Proverbs 27:1
In life, there are things we are always looking forward to. Hoping for that new job promotion, finding a loving spouse to spend your life with, having children. Or maybe you’ve dreamt of opening that cute little bakery in the middle of town for years and you are so close you can almost taste it; but it is still out of reach. Perhaps you, like me, have been pressing forward hoping for relief from a health condition, but healing hasn’t come yet.
This season – it feels more like the “in-between” instead of “I’ve arrived” and maybe you, like me, have looked at the “in-between” and felt stuck, discouraged, and overwhelmed. If that’s you, you’re in the right place. Welcome, fellow traveler of the “in-between”.
I don’t know exactly what it is about this middle ground that feels so deflating. You know? This space between where we started and where we want to be. Or maybe it feels like you were suddenly thrown into this season without your permission and despite your best efforts. But however we ended up here, we know with every fiber of our being that we want to be in the next chapter already.
We long to be in a fuller, more “healed” and “whole” chapter so we can do “bigger” and “better” things. How do we embrace the “in-between” seasons whenever they so often seem to be filled with such difficulty, weariness, and resistance?
Often, we are constantly looking forward to that next chapter, but tomorrow is not promised.
This moment that very much feels like the “in-between” comes with the stark realization that this is the “now”. But we have been living for tomorrow while we are called to today.
While it may sound simple, this can be a difficult truth to swallow because a lot of times the now is filled with deep struggle. Sometimes we don’t even know how we got to where we are right now and we’ve been praying that this season will come to an end.
But we are here in this “in-between”. I would even say we are called to this “in-between”. Called to the now. Today, God has provided and equipped you with everything you need to get through today. He has provided everything thing you need in order to embrace this season, even if it is more of Himself. And really that is what we need more than anything.
More than the new job. More than a spouse. More than our dreams coming true. More than physical healing. We need more of Jesus and He gives of Himself freely and willingly to those who ask.
Realizing that we are made for the “in between” allows us to embrace today knowing that it’s not just something to be passed through as quickly as possible, but that there is deep promise and abundant provision for the “in-between”.
God is using even the everyday, ordinary, mundane, sometimes painful moments of the “in-between” to provide more of himself, shape you into the person He desires for you to be, and prepare you for the fulfillment of the promises He has for you. This season is not wasted. God cares about what is happening in the “in-between”. Even the waiting is evidence of His faithfulness.
Today, I invite you to join me in embracing the beautiful potential of the “in-between”.
Thank you for today. Thank you that you have created me for these moments I am living in and that you promise to provide and sustain. I ask that you help me to embrace the “in-between” knowing that this is where you have me today. This is where your wisdom, sovereignty, and love saw best for me to be today, and I praise you for that. Even when the “in-between” is filled with hard things, you are good and you have not abandoned me.
In Jesus’ name,
