‘Commit your works to the Lord [submit and trust them to Him], And your plans will succeed [if you respond to His will and guidance].‘ Proverbs 16:3 (AMP)
Today, you come to the Lord, weary and wondering if all these daily tasks, the ones that seem monotonous and frankly mundane, truly matter. He takes one look at you and says, “Come to me and I will give you rest.” Your shoulders fall into place and you feel lighter already. Nothing has changed but his presence, as you make time to meet with Him.
He begins by saying this blessing over you, “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon (you), and establish the work of (your )hands upon you; yes, establish the work of (your) hands!” (Psalm 90:17) You stare wide eyed because you haven’t spoken a word and he has completely seen the deepest recesses of your heart where you have struggled to find purpose and meaning.
His hands extended out on his lap remind you of his work, the creation of the world first and second his work on the cross. All of History seems to spin before your eyes. He smiles knowingly and says, “For (you) are (my) workmanship, created in (Me), Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that you should walk in them. “ (Ephesians 2:10) So, I am the creator and you are the good creation I have made and your work absolutely matters. I have prepared them beforehand just for you. So every time you take time to stop and help that customer or provide water again to that toddler I am present with you establishing your work.
Come now he says, “let us study the ant ,” he says with a twinkle in his eyes. ‘Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. “ (Proverbs 6:6-11) You have no time to feel offended but instead feel invigorated and laugh out loud! Of course you think of the ant! If he cares and watches over them how much more will he not watch over me and my work?
So, He says, “your work matters because it aligns with my will. You care for my creation, you create order out of chaos, you bring beauty to places where it’s lacking, you bring delight through a dish, and you allow for growth to occur in a garden. Your work is beautiful and it brings me delight whether it’s at home, at school, or in the office. Commit your works to me and do not doubt that they bring meaning and purpose to your life. Remind yourself instead- of who has given you this work and of how he will use it to bring about the redemptive work of his Kingdom now.”
Jesus asks you, “Do you remember what I did after I completed my work?” You reply, “ yes, you rested.” “That’s right, Jesus replies. “ I have set an example for you. Purposeful work is part of our covenant relationship and I have provided for you rest.” When you follow the rhythms I have set for you, you will work from rest.”
You exhale deeply allowing the tensions that hurry leaves behind to be released. You, learn forward in gratitude and allow the aroma of His goodness to give you peace.
